But, whether we’d like to admit it or not, writers are human beings. Emotions are just part of our biological makeup and they do, on occasion, get us seriously stuck. We ALL get sad, frustrated, angry, or depressed sometimes. It’s perfectly natural. But having feelings doesn’t make us weak or incapable writers—it just makes us human writers. 6 Ways to Hack Into Your Emotions and Become Infinitely More Creative If strong emotions are getting in the way of your writing, then I recommend the following seven methods for hacking into those emotions in order to become infinitely more creative: 1. Write Out The Emotion Open a new document on your computer and write out what you’re feeling in this new document. Please, let it all out: the anger, the frustration, […]

4 Ways To Hack Into Your Thoughts And Become Infinitely More Creative

What if I told you that the biggest threat to your writing is not your lack of passion, your lack of creativity, or your lack of skill? What if I told you that the biggest threat to your writing is… your mind? That’s right. Your mind is the biggest obstacle standing between you and all the work you are trying to accomplish. Our mind is often the one that needs the most convincing that our writing is worthwhile. This is because our mind is hard-wired to protect us from any possible danger. You see, in order to protect us, our mind initially perceives anything it encounters as a threat—including your writing. If this sounds strange, and kind of primitive, as if your mind is trying to protect you from a tiger hiding behind a tree in a jungle—then you’re absolutely right. Your mind […]

There’s No Day But Today

There’s No Day But Today

Editors note: this post was originally featured in 2014, new blog posts on The C2C return September 11th, 2017. Right now, before you, there is a blank page. I know, the first thing you think of is the page before it: the one you wrote all over. The one with all the mistakes and the awkward moments. That last page isn’t as perfect as you would wish it. It’s got all these scraggily lines and missing parts and strange tangents. The first thing you want to make with your new, blank page is something better in relation to that last page. But don’t do that. Because then the blank page you write today will be reacting to the page before it. And, remember, this is a new page. It’s meant to be new. It can’t be a reaction to what came before it, it has to stand on its own. What To Write On That Blank Page The second cold instinct is to write something […]

It’s Time To Call On Your Ancestors

In the wonderful documentary Cave of Forgotten Dreams, directed by Werner Hezog, an anthropologist tells the story of when he met a member of an indigenous tribe who would draw over the ancient paintings left behind by his ancient ancestors. The anthropologist, whose main concern was the preservation of these ancient paintings, asked the indigenous tribe member why he was drawing over these ancient paintings. (In the anthropologist’s opinion, such behavior was ruining a precious artifact for the annals of humanity.) The indigenous tribe member simply shrugged his shoulders and explained that his ancient ancestors where actually working through him at that moment, helping him preserve the painting for future generations. The response shocked the anthropologist and made him question the traditional Western view of our relation to our past, our ancestry, and artifacts that echo our human tradition. Becoming A Living Artifact […]

How To Be A Rebel

Editors note: this post was originally featured in 2014, new blog posts on The C2C return September 11th, 2017. You look around. You see everyone doing the same thing. The expected thing. All the same stories, the same clothes, the same ideas. Tired, old, worn-out. You feel trapped, suffocated. You wanna dance, but you’re in a middle of a business meeting. You wanna laugh, but you’re in a courtroom. You wanna smile, but the teacher is speaking. Life is boring. Life is trying. Life is predictable. The status quo. The machine. The system. The adults in the room. You don’t belong, but you pretend. Put on a tie, but you wanna wear a black shirt splashed with paint. Comb your hair, but you want it to be wily. Sleep, when you want to stay up all night. Walk, when all you want to do is run. They write the things that have been said–you crave to shout something new. You’re stuck. […]
