How To Be More Disciplined

How To Be More Disciplined

Editors note: the following post was first published in 2013. New posts return January 2nd 2017. One of the most common questions that I receive from readers has to do with a word that, to be honest, I despise. That word is discipline. People always want to know how to be more disciplined in the writing process and in their lives. They see me and they think I am more “disciplined” than them. I try to explain to them that no, I am not more disciplined than them, and that I simply learned long ago that trying hard to be “disciplined” does not work. I try to explain to them that I am not more disciplined than them, I am simply more devoted. I use my devotion to my passion to motivate me in the long-term, and this deep devotion, in turn, makes me appear more “disciplined.” I think what confuses most people about discipline is that they think that […]

Why We Need To End Our Obsession With Youth

Why We Need To End Our Obsession With Youth

Editors note: the following post was first published in 2014. New posts return January 2nd 2017. “Love alone is a kind of reality with no manifestation, since love makes itself manifest in wisdom; and wisdom without love is like a manifestation with no reality, since wisdom is a manifestation of love.” – Emmanuel Swedenborg As I grow older, I’m surprised that I don’t have the same kind of terror associated with age that I’m told I’m supposed to have. Instead of feeling terrified because I’m closer to death, or that I’ve not accomplished my dreams yet, I feel so much more confident and happy than I expected I would be. I think it’s because I know more—I am wiser. I value this wisdom because I did a lot of stupid things when I was younger, and I also wasted far too much of my time on things that did not truly matter. Today, the things that younger people freak out about, […]

3 Steps To Finding (And Following) Your Calling In Life

3 Steps To Finding (And Following) Your Calling In Life

November 14, 2016

In my post 5 Common Myths People Have About Finding Their Passion, we went over the common misconceptions people have about figuring out your passion and following that passion. Today I want to talk about something very related to your passion but with a subtle–but important–difference. Today I would like to talk about how to figure out if something is your calling. The Difference Between Your Passion and Your Calling The differences between your passion and your calling are often razor-thin. A calling can be rooted in your passion, but your passion is not always your calling. First, we must admit that many of us have several different things we are passionate about. For example: I’m passionate about cooking, film, acting, dancing, singing, drawing, painting, and of course writing. But each of these passions means something different to me. My passion for cooking is more like a hobby, for instance. It’s a private thing I like to do for my […]

Understanding The Spiritual Symbols In Your Life

Understanding The Spiritual Symbols In Your Life

November 7, 2016

Editors note: the following post was first published in 2014. New posts return January 2nd 2017. “[T]he imagination loves symbol because it recognizes that inner divinity can only find expression in symbolic form. The symbol never gives itself completely to the light.” – John O’ Donohue Themes are all around us. Whether the theme be heartbreak, regret, mortality, war, hunger, joy, companionship, destruction, change, reconciliation or letting go—each theme carries with it certain symbols, and each symbol can guide us in understanding what each theme is trying to tell us, and what lesson we are expected to master in that particular moment of time. My job as narrator and storyteller is to observe and point out the themes that are currently being experienced by humanity. I take each theme and apply symbols to it—symbols are images or physical representations that help to illuminate the abstract truths being taught through the theme and which, in turn, help guide us to mastering […]

A Soul Mate Revelation

A Soul Mate Revelation

October 24, 2016

I do believe in soul mates. I know it’s an idea that has become out of vogue recently, but as one who has learned to trust and have tremendous faith in spiritual laws, it is a concept that makes sense to me in a rather practical and pragmatic way than most people view it: romance has its spiritual lessons to teach us and lessons that cannot be learned on one’s own. Romance therefore is less it’s own separate thing but highly entrenched in our overall goal of collective enlightenment. What Is A Soul Mate?  For many years, I have tried to understand romantic relationships – what they were for, how to find one, and even making peace with my current single status. Now, after several romantic relationships (and dates) later, I am coming to a fundamental understanding about soul mates that I don’t think is mainstream.  First of all, I notice people tend to brush aside the issue of soul […]
